Yes, it’s still warm outside. That’s often how it is during the first few weeks of fall. But that doesn’t mean we can simply ignore that time marches forward, and it can quickly march into the cold part of the year. Right now is the time to prepare your home for the upcoming cooler weather.
A few weeks ago, we asked you to do an end-of-season evaluation for your air conditioning system. Now we’re asking you to move to the next stage and do an evaluation of your gas furnace. Will the furnace make it through the coming winter? Is it better to replace it? What repair services does it need?
Scheduling regular maintenance is the first step
It’s hard to answer many of these questions unless you are a professional HVAC technician who can inspect and analyze the furnace. But it’s easy to find someone to do this inspection: when you sign our Proactive Service Agreement, you’ll have a visit from a skilled tech who will give your furnace a top-to-bottom check-up. The tech will provide you with recommendations for repairs the furnace may need, and will also inform you if the furnace is getting too old and should be replaced rather than serviced further.
The furnace’s age
If you know how many years your furnace has been keeping your home warm, you’ll already have an idea if it’s near to the end of its service life. A gas furnace that receives routine maintenance every fall can last between 15 to 20 years. If your furnace is older than 20 years, than we recommend you have a serious talk with your technician about replacement options.

Gas furnaces are designed to run as safely as possible. But with extreme age comes a higher risk of combustion dangers and carbon monoxide leaks.
